What ARG/US Actually Is
ARG/US (Aviation Research Group/U.S.) is an independent safety research and audit organization that has been evaluating charter operators since 1995. Unlike marketing certifications or self-reported safety claims, ARG/US conducts in-depth audits of an operator's historical safety record, pilot training programs, maintenance procedures, insurance coverage, and financial stability. The rating is recognized globally by corporate flight departments, insurance underwriters, and Fortune 500 travel risk managers.
The Three Rating Levels
- Gold: The highest achievable rating. Requires an extensive on-site audit covering safety management systems, crew training records, maintenance documentation, and operational history. Operators must demonstrate a proactive safety culture, not just compliance.
- Silver: Mid-tier rating based on historical data review and documentation analysis. Covers FAA/authority compliance, insurance verification, and basic operational standards.
- Charter: Entry-level rating confirming the operator holds a valid Air Operator Certificate and meets minimum regulatory requirements.

What the Gold Audit Covers
The Gold rating audit examines pilot flight hours and recurrent training records, maintenance tracking systems and parts provenance, safety management system (SMS) implementation, insurance coverage adequacy, financial health indicators, FAA and AFAC violation history, and drug and alcohol testing compliance. It is not a one-time achievement -- operators must maintain the standard through ongoing monitoring and periodic re-audits.
Why It Matters When Choosing a Charter
In private aviation, there is no mandatory safety rating system equivalent to airline star ratings.
